School Newsletter - Sports Report

February 2023

Traralgon District Swimming Championships:

On Tuesday 14th February 30 swimmers from St Gabriel’s competed in the Traralgon District Swimming Championships at the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre. All swimmers displayed great endeavour and wonderful sportsmanship on the day. At the end of the Carnival St Gabriel’s was presented with the winning shield for the event with St Pauls Anglican Grammar finishing in 2nd Place. On Wednesday 8th of March, 17 swimmers from St Gabriels will compete in the Division Championship to be held at the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre. I would like to thank Miss Johnson, Mrs Mihaly and Miss Hayes for supervising and coordinating the swimmers on the day. And a special thank you to parents who volunteered to assist as timekeepers on the day: Emma Marino and Emily Couling.

Collingwood Football Clinic

Last Tuesday, 4 Collingwood players held a 45 minute football clinic with all the students from Year 3. Tom Mithcell, Ed Allan, Will Kelly and Isaac Quaynor helped the students in fine tuning their skills in kicking, handballing and reflexes. At the end of the clinic the students were able to ask the players some inquisitive questions about being a professional football player. I would like to thank Mrs Charlton for organising this event for the school.

From the 21 - 23 January 2023, Aliza Couling, Bailey Heafield, Harry Kurrle and Harry Giblett took part in the 2023 Long Course Country Championships at the Wangaratta outdoor pool and swam for the Traralgon Swimming club..

This is one of the largest events on the Swimming Victoria calendar and each of these students had to meet very quick times to qualify for the meet.

Aliza qualified for 5 events, Bailey qualified in one event, Harry Kurrle qualified in 4 events and Harry Giblett qualified in one event.

Harry Kurrle made three finals including finishing 4th in the Boys 11 & U 50 Butterfly. Aliza Couling made two finals and finished with a Bronze medal in the Girls 11&U 50 Breaststroke.
