Dear parents and carers,
I am sure you would all agree that we are so fortunate to live in this wonderful country, Australia. As we listen to the reports of extreme weather events occurring across Europe and America, not to mention the strife and tragedy in Afghanistan, it makes us more grateful than ever to be living in this relatively safe and free country. Even with all that is going on with Covid, it is timely to help our students appreciate and enjoy our living conditions and maintain a positive outlook.
This is the time of the year when families are thinking about school, for 2022, for their potential Prep children. It is important for any current families who are intending to enrol children in St Gabriel’s for 2022, to do so immediately. We have more enrolment applications than we can accommodate and I need to let people know if they have received a place. Obviously current families get preference, however, enrolments closed last term and I need to be fair to others who may need to look elsewhere. If you have not yet sent the enrolment in and are expecting your child to attend Prep next year, please contact the school immediately.
If there are any families intending on moving from St Gabriel’s in 2022 for any reason please contact the office.
Year 4 students had a very enjoyable camp this week. Thanks to all concerned in making this camp such a positive experience.
Best wishes,
Roslyn Joyner

School Sport Victoria - Announcement
Currently, all interschool sport events and competitions are back up and running again. This is great news for all school communities. The resumption of any interschool sport was made on the advice from the Department of Health and that it is considered safe to do so. Parents are able to access the SSV website for the status of all events held in Victoria at www.ssv.vic.edu.au Unfortunately spectators are unable to attend any current inter school sport competitions.
Winter Round Robin SSV competition New Date - Monday 23rd August.
The new date set for the Division Winter Round Competition is Monday 23rd August. St Gabriels mixed football team and Girls Soccer team will play in the Divisional Winter Round Competition in Traralgon. The winner of this competition will proceed to play in the Regional competition at a date yet to be confirmed. I would like to thank Mr Adams for training the football team and Mrs Colantouno for coaching the girls soccer team. School Sports Victoria has stated to all schools although inter school sport competition is up and running again there are restrictions on who is able to attend these events. All the students competing in this competition have received a permission notice to attend and I ask for the notice to be returned as soon as possible. On Monday only the players, teaching staff and volunteers who are assisting on the day eg: coaches or referees. Unfortunately no parents can attend the event as a spectator on the day. Each team has to enter the names of the students and staff attending on the day and give this to the event coordinator.
Hockey Announcement - Winter Round Robin Competition
I have been informed that our school has now won the Regional Championships as they have no school to compete against at this level . I have been in touch with School Sport Victoria and our school will receive a pennant for winning at this level. At this stage due to COVID -19 restriction a state competition has not been scheduled. Fingers crossed the state will lift restrictions in Melbourne and our hockey will be able to compete at a state level sometime in term 4.
State Cross Country Championship - Postponed
The following students Sierra Colantuono and Dempsey Podmore from grade 5 have made it through to compete in the State Cross Country Championships to be held at the Yarra Valley Racing Club. This event was scheduled for today, Thursday 5th of August but has been postponed due to COVID restrictions. At the Regional Championships at Warragul Sierra finished in 3rd place in the U/11 age group whilst Dempsey Podmore also in the u/11 age group finished in 2nd place . All of our nine students who competed on the day can hold their heads up high as they showed great sportsmanship and determination on the day.
Jump Rope for Heart - (Fund raising Activity)
All the students have received a pamphlet detailing our school taking part in the Jump Rope for Heart skipping and fundraising program. If parents have any concerns with this information please email me at dhogan@stgtraralgon.catholic.edu.au . The aim of the program is to get students physically active, whilst learning about the importance of healthy behaviours to look after their health and at the same time, they’ll give back to the community by raising funds to help save Australian hearts. All you have to do is register your child online at jumprope.org.au/parents. Then share your child’s page with friends and family and ask them to donate and finally log your child's skipping activity so they can earn prizes and virtual badges. The school will have a special skipping exhibition tomorrow Friday 20th August. 16 students have practised a number of skipping skills this week and will perform these for the Prep-2 students from 9.00am - 9.15am and Yrs 3-6 9.15am - 9.30am. I would like to thank the 16 students who have given up their time this week to learn new skills and entertain other students. A job well done.
Schools Sporting Grant - Lacrosse
This term St Gabriel’s were successful in receiving Government funding from the schools sporting grant. Next week the students will be coached by adults in the game of Lacrosse. Lacrosse is a team game in which a ball is passed between teammates using a stick with a mesh or net at one end. It originates in Native American communities where it was used as a training ground for tribal warriors and dates back almost a thousand years. The students will learn the skills of the game and participate in a modified game during their physical education lessons. Please ask your children at home what they learnt about the game of Lacrosse.
Division Athletics - Tuesday 31st August
On Tuesday 31st August 33 students will compete in the SSV Division Athletics Sporting Championship in Newborough. St Gabriel’s has 6 teams competing in the relay team. These students will practice next week during lunch time in preparation for this event. A permission notice will be sent home next Monday for all competitors and a program will be attached.
