Dear parents/carers,
It is exciting to see the commencement of the new building project which will bring three new classroom spaces, a library and a large multi-purpose/STEM room with a designated Chapel area. The building project will be in progress until term 3 of next year. Noticeably there will be more traffic movement in and around the school. At all times child safety is paramount in making decisions about the operations/management of the school including traffic flow, parking and pedestrian traffic.
Please note that the front area of the school is the designated “drop off” and “pick up” area for students at the start of the day and the end of the day. It is a traffic flow through zone during these times-8.30am until 9.00am then 3.15 until 3.45pm.
Some parking is available on the Rangeview Drive edge which can be feely used during the day to access the school. During drop off and pick up times the parking is still available for those who do not wish to use the drop off curb, however, it is important that the USUAL procedure for accessing the school during drop off/pick up times is still carried out. This means that the students and/or parents get out of the vehicle then proceed to the speed hump at the exit end of the zone and cross over to the path near GATE B. This is where drivers are expecting children to cross. Whenever possible we have an extra teacher supervising this “crossing”. Students/parents then proceed past Gate B to Gate A or the office. There should be no pedestrians crossing the asphalt drive-through area at any other place during these drop off/pick up times. It is only a few metres further than what we have been doing prior to the commencement of the building. I ask parents to abide by these rules so that children do not get confused and think they can just cross over anywhere. There are also two other gates that can be accessed to enter/exit the school in the other streets surrounding the school. The front is extremely busy and these rules need to be in place.
Reminders:
Students at drop off are to get out of the vehicle on the left hand side in the mornings.
The drop off is not a parking zone so drivers should not be getting out of the vehicle to walk around to the other side.
Bags need to be inside the vehicle so no child needs to go to the rear of the car.
Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep all of our children safe.

Latrobe Valley 10000 steps Challenge:
I would like to inform the school community that almost every staff member at St Gabriel’s has participated in this year’s Latrobe Valley 10000 step challenge. The staff members have been placed into teams of six and seven and have been competing against each other to claim the title as the champion walking team for 2021. The Latrobe Valley 10000 step challenge started on Monday 18th October and ends on Sunday 14th November . So far St Gabriel’s staff have walked a total of 10,698,793 steps and when steps are converted to Kilometres they have walked a total of 8,152. A fantastic achievement. Well done to all the staff for participating in this wellbeing event.
Schools Sporting Grant - Lacrosse
This term St Gabriel’s were successful in receiving Government funding from the schools sporting grant. Next week the students from P-6 will be coached by adults in the game of Lacrosse over a two week period. Lacrosse is a team game in which a ball is passed between teammates using a stick with a mesh or net at one end. It originates in Native American communities where it was used as a training ground for tribal warriors and dates back almost a thousand years. The students will learn the skills of the game and participate in a modified game during their physical education lessons. Please ask your children next week at home what they learnt about the game of Lacrosse.
Sporting Calendar Dates for 2022.
At this stage I can confirm the following dates for 2022. The St Gabriels “Have a Go Swimming Trials” at Ford Swim Centre will be held on Tuesday 8th of February from 10.00am until 12.00pm for students from Year 3-6. The Traralgon District Swimming carnival will be held on Tuesday 22nd February at the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre in Traralgon. I hope to advertise in the school newsletter next week all the dates for sporting events to be held in 2022.

Signing children in and out of school
If your child needs to leave early, or has an appointment, then parents must sign in when they return/arrive. A note must be supplied to the classroom teacher so that they are aware of why the child is leaving and they can then record the absence. If your child is unwell to speed up their recovery by not allowing your child to return to school until they are fully recovered.
